Quilting status

Time for quilting has been at a premium since the New Year.  As many of you know, I work full time as a legal secretary so that already knocks some of my time out.  This is not really a major problem, last year I did the majority of my work on the weekends anyway.  David would help with Xander, I would do the Block of the Month (BOM) and then work on my gift quilts.  Heck, half the time David would help with those too, doing my cutting or ironing.

Well, this year I took a break from the BOM program at Heart to Heart.  I saw the preview of it at their Christmas Open House.  They had several completed blocks to show off but it just did not appeal to me.  The pattern called for you to do a different “special embroidery” block for each month.  You could do the quilt without the embroidery, but it was my opinion that the embroidery block really made the quilt, it gave it that extra “WOW I’ve got to have that quilt” effect, and there was just no way I would be able to do the embroidery block.

Don’t get me wrong, I do have access to an embroidery machine (my mother-in-law would let me use hers anytime).  But I know that I would not feel comfortable borrowing one of her sewing machines for the whole year that it would take to work on this quilt and I also knew I would not be able to go up to her home (a roughly 3 hour round trip just for the drive and not including the actual embroidery work) once a month to use the machine if I did not borrow it and bring it home with me.

I have told David that, and he agreed that maybe we would just take the year off and work on quilts I was interested in.  It is not like I did not have enough at the house to keep me busy.  I figure if they sell the entire pattern with embroidery CD at the end of the program, and if he would still like to have the quilt, I may see how much they would charge for it without the getting actually material for the individual blocks and making it at a later time for him, letting him pick his color scheme.

So my “OK I have to work this weekend” incentive was gone but that shouldn’t keep me from quilting right?  Well then David started spring semester in his PhD. program.  He is taking 4 classes and it has kept him jumping since January, so I lost my helper when I do have time…and there is no one to watch Xander.  Long story short – here it is already mid-April and until this weekend I had not touched a piece of material.

I did iron material and cut enough Sunbonnet Sue’s for 2 quilts and ironed them down on their respective squares.  I am hoping to iron down the Sunbonnet Sam’s I had cut last year for another 2 quilts and I hope to iron and cut the Christmas material that Xander has picked out for his Appliquéd Christmas quilt before our trip but it is doubtful.  I had planned for about 8 Christmas present quilts this year, but am afraid I will not get them done now.  Plus, I know I will not get the 2 quilts done that Xander wanted to give his teachers’ this year, maybe he can deliver them next year.
