Busy Saturday

Today is the third Saturday of the month, and around here that means time for me to go to the quilt store.  Third Saturday is when I pick up my ‘Block of the Month’ quilt square to work on.  As I said earlier, my mother-in-law recommended I get involved in these last year and I really learned a lot.

Most quilt stores offer a ‘Block of the Month’ plan and if you want to learn more advanced piecing I can not recommend them higher.  The way my quilt store works it is you show up the third Saturday of January either at 9:00 AM or 1:00 PM and sign up for the quilt.  You meet the other quilters, see some samples of what the blocks are going to be and see any new tools the shop might have for sale.  After all of this you pay $5 for the pattern and fabric for that months square.  There is also usually an offset piece to purchase for about $10.  So your first month costs $15, but when you come in the next month with the previous months block finished they give you your $5 back so the next months block is ‘free’.  In the end you end up with a beautiful king-sized quilt for about $125.

Here is the crazy thing though – my quilt store actually offers TWO ‘Block of the Month’ plans.  The first is the $5 quilt I just talked about, the other is usually about $10-$15 a month and is usually much more involved.  This year, they are making a lap quilt for Halloween but each square is appliquéd.  I have never done any appliqué work but two of the quilts I want to work on use the technique, so David talked me into signing up for BOTH ‘Block of the Month’ sets.  The nice thing with the Halloween quilt is that they are offering sessions where you show up at the store and work on the squares with the other quilters so I can get some help making sure I am doing everything right.

Just what I need, another two quilts to work on this year!
